Windy Brow Game Farm

The picturesque and historical town of Cullinan is more famous as the home of De Beers Premier Diamond Mine than for its nature. However, the Oppenheimer family, major shareholders in De Beers, have always had a strong interest in nature conservation and have vast areas of land throughout Southern Africa, devoted to nature conservation. They partner Birdlife South Africa in the development of birding routes as an example and own Ezemvelo Nature Reserve near Bronkhorstspruit. The ground on which Windy Brow now is, was once part of the farm on which the famous Cullinan Diamond was found and until this year was still owned by the mining company. Recently, this 300ha piece of ground was purchase by the former manager who has major plans to upgrade the facilities.

         
 

The reserve offers a wide range of activities from hiking to mountain biking, team building, game viewing plus weddings and small conferences. The owner also offers game drives in the adjacent Premier Game Reserve and tours of the mine.

Accommodation is provided to suite most needs and numbers and range from semi luxury to basic hiker's accommodation. Visitors do not have to sleep over in the reserve however and indeed can walk the entire trail network in one day or ride the mountain bike trails in a morning but it is well worth taking the time to experience the reserve overnight.

  
         
 

The team building course has been developed in a deep donga with nets and many interesting obstacles such as a climbing wall.

  
 
         
 
 

There is a network of approximately 12km of hiking trails on the reserve. The trails can be regarded as easy to average difficulty and suitable for the whole family.

There is a wide variety of animal life on the reserve such as Giraffe, Kudu and Impala.

  

Conclusions

Situated close to Pretoria, Windy Brow is a convenient weekend outing for the whole family. Alternatively one can book to go there for the day. It is necessary to book with Jacana due to the fact that if no one has booked they may not open the gates.
