Stamvrug Hiking Trail

The Waterberg Mountains are home to a number of fine weekend hiking trails. The main advantage that these trails have is their close proximity to Johannesburg and Pretoria. The Stamvrug Trail is situated less than two hours drive from Gauteng. The trail is within the Bateleur Private Nature Reserve which in turn forms part of the UNESCO proclaimed Waterberg Biosphere Reserve.

There are several trail options available to the hiker, from half day trails to a two day backpacking trail.

Overnight backpacking trail

The trail runs through the mountains that skirt the basin in which the Bateleur Nature Reserve is situated.

From the Kloof Hut the trail is 13km to the Stamvrug Hut. Those who start from Stamvrug hut also have a 13km trek as their first leg to Kloof Hut known as the Leopard Trail. The 2nd days of the trail are 7km long and are the Sebra and Porcupine trails.

There are also day trails of varying lengths. These are the Escarpment Trail (5km), the Game Trail (6km) and the Moepel Trail (8km)

The area abounds in indigenous nature and it is well worth starting early to take advantage of the early morning crispness of the new day. Wildlife is also more visible in the first part of the day.

Along the trail there is opportunities for swimming, especially during the summer.

Take your time to absorb the beautiful spectra of nature. An inquisitive Kudu bull might just come and inspect the new addition to the area!

Other possible adventure activities include rock climbing.

Accommodation

Kloof and Stamvrug huts are comfortable and have bunk beds and mattresses, warm water showers, under cover braai areas with fire wood. Ablutions include flush toilets and showers. There is also a gas stove provided at each of the overnight huts
