Sakabula Cottages and Hiking
Trail
Situated close to the small former mining hamlet of
Poortjie about 40 minutes journey by car from Johannesburg lies this gem of a
weekend getaway. Stay the weekend at these well appointed cottages and explore
the area on foot. There is plenty of game to be seen including large numbers of
the graceful Eland. The trail was laid out by Prof. Leon Hugo.

The two thatched roof cottages
each sleeping 6-8 people. The cottages overlook a lovely dam and it is
common to find the wild animals of the area coming to drink from it. |

The hiking trail is approx 16km
long but their are shorter options available. The trail passes a number
of small exploration shafts but this certainly does not detract from the
trail. There is a surprising amount of water on the trail and a large
pool is ideally situated close to the end that is suitable for swimming
in. It is important
to carry at least two litres of water. It is essential to book in
advance for day visits to walk the trail. |

Conclusion
The Sakabula Cottages are well
worth booking for a well deserved weekend break. They are well equipped
and as they are only 40 minutes from Johannesburg ideal for those that
can't get away from the office early. The trails that are kept separate
from the cottages, are ideal for the hiking groups that are looking for
something different and close to home.
If you are hiking the trail as a day visitor, please
respect the privacy and quiet of the people staying at the cottages. |
