Situated in the Drakensberg mountains between Memel and Newcastle, the Ngogo network of trails have something to offer everyone who enjoys unspoilt nature. For those who enjoy a challenging hike there is the two day backpack route, while those who enjoy something a little easier there are several options of day routes from Dumblane cottage. Also, for those who like to do their hiking in style, there is the option of catering (dinner and breakfast). For those who would like to explore the area on horseback, there is the guided horse trail option available at a very reasonable price.

Accommodation

The basecamp for the trails is Dumblane cottage which is easilly accessible from the main road and is well equipped with electricity, hot water showers and braai facilities. The Ngogo cottage also has electricity, braai area, beds and mattresses, hot showers and flush toilet.

Backpack route-Day 1

The first day of the backpack trail starts with a short walk across grassland before a steep ascent up to the top of the escarpment, about a climb of 600m. From the top the views are very beautiful of the mountains and lowland areas.

Bacpack route-Day2

The second day of the trail takes the hiker through some beautiful kloofs with lovely cool streams to cool off in.

     

The trail passes a lovely waterfall before reaching the top of the escarpment. After a short distance the trail start its descent through Baboons pass and Donkeys pass back to Dumblane cottage

Conclusion

A lovely trail in a lovely area. Well worth a visit. The facilities are good and well maintained.
