Mosamane Hiking Trail
Rosendal, Eastern Free State
Mosamane (The
Ground Squirrel) is an apt name for this trail as when I approached, the farm
along the farm road, the Mosamane scurried playfully along in front of my car.
Mosamane is situated close to the Moolmanshoek conservancy which is a popular
venue for for hikers with its Waterkloof and Sphinx trails. The trail was
developed by Tiaan Strydom who has been involved in the layout of several hiking
trails in the area.

Mosamane
consists of one single day trail of about 6 hours
duration plus the option of doing a Geocaching route.
What is Geocaching? It is a type of treasure hunt using
a GPS. |

|
Accommodation is in the form of a barn that can
sleep 18 people on single beds, an ablution block
with 6 toilets, 6 showers with warm water from a
'Donkey', an undercover sundowner area and braai
facilities. A kitchen with fridge and gas stove aids
the cooking of food.
A well known feature of the
area is the 'Elephant Trunk' rock outcrop. Another
feature is the weird shapes that the erosion forms
in the dongas. |

The flora of
the area is quite special during spring and summer.
Birds to be seen include the Bald Ibis and the
Secretary Bird. |

The trail
has its ups and downs with surprises around each
bend. You will find 'Owls Eyes', 'Cathedral',
several natural showers and a fairy garden on route
to the outlook of the 'old-old people' |

There are
several ladders along the way to help the hiker
reach the more inaccessible parts of the trail. |

Conclusion
A weekend spent at Mosamane is
well worthwhile. The second day option of Geocaching
is certainly worth trying out as it seems to
be a new craze that is catching on around the world |
