Modderfontein Nature Reserve

The Modderfontein Conservation Society is a volunteer body that helps preserve the Modderfontein Nature Reserve which is located in Modderfontein, Johannesburg, South Africa.

We give guided walks around the Reserve and we hold a monthly talk on a nature related topic at the Modderfontein town hall. The Reserve is a great place to take a nature walk or spot birds so please look at our schedule of events on the “Walks & Talks” page to see when the next walk or talk is on. Please note, the only way to walk through the Reserve is with a guide.

Objectives

1. To actively recruit members from Modderfontein and surrounding communities and encourage interest in conservation, with a view to maintaining a suitable balance between its many aspects.

2. To strive for the protection and management of indigenous flora and fauna, including bird species.

3. To encourage and promote interest in preserving the natural and historical aspects of Modderfontein.

4. To act as environmental watchdog within the Modderfontein area.

5. To provide guidance to AECI, Residents Associations and local authorities on policy regarding the purpose, use and development of the Modderfontein Nature Reserve (MNR).

6. To formulate and maintain policy on the removal and replacement of alien plant species in the MNR.

7. To act as advisors on the development of the MNR.

8. To facilitate experiential environmental education and training for school children from a full range of cultural backgrounds.

The walk will start at 16:30 and the braai is lit at about 18h00. Come when you can and bring your own food, drinks, cutlery, crockery and something to sit on.
