Magoebaskloof Hiking Trail


The Magoebaskloof Hiking Trail is situated on the escarpment close to the Limpopo Province town of Tzaneen. The trail offers several options for the hiker from two days up to five days duration. Trail huts along the route take the form of old forestry buildings or modern purpose-built wooden chalets. The area is rich in indigenous forest through which sparkling mountain streams descend.

There are six hut on the Magoebaskloof Hiking Trail. They are positioned in groups of two, Woodbush Hut/Seepsteen Hut, Broederstroom Hut/Waterfall Hut, De Hoek Hut/Dokolewa Hut. For instance, the five day trail option could involve the following combination of huts. Starting at Dokolewa Pools to Seepsteen Stables(9Km), Seepsteen Stables to Waterfall(13.8Km), Waterfall to Dokolewa Pools (18Km), Dokolewa Pools to Woodbush(9Km), Woodbush to De Hoek(11.7Km)

Along the route one passes some of the largest gum trees in South Africa. The Dap Naude Dam lies close to Waterfall hut.

  The annual rainfall in the area is high and it is advisable to be prepared at any time of the year.

 Because of the presence of moisture there is an abundance of beautiful Fungi along the way.

     

The forests are lush and ferns are plentiful along the way.

 
     
 

The trail, especially the five day trail can be quite tough. The route from Waterfall to Dokolewa pools can be strenuous and long after heavy rain.

     

Conclusion

The Magoebaskloof Hiking Trail is a very beautiful trail. It needs a certain degree of fitness to complete the trail especially the five day route. The two day routes are less demanding and suitable for family hikers.
