A Shared Responsibility

1 September 2006

Mayor, Councillor Amos Masondo

Spring Day 2006 saw dignitaries and concerned parties from the Johannesburg area come together to witness the launch of Joburg City Park's initiative to plant thousands of indigenous trees throughout Soweto. The guest list was headed by Mayor of Johannesburg, Councillor Amos Masondo who spoke about the importance of trees for the city.

6000 trees were planted at 12 noon and aided by children from schools throughout Soweto, the ceremony went off very well.

Major donations from Rand Water, Sappi and Aucor helped make the day possible. Congratulations are due to Oscar Oliphant and his team from City Parks for the fine job done in organizing the event.

The ceremony is just the initial stage in what is planned to make Soweto part of what has become the urban forest of Greater Johannesburg which has already 1,600,000 street trees.
