The Salvation Army Firlands children's home is in Linden, a suburb in the north west of Johannesburg. The home caters for children of all ages and from all backgrounds. Most of the children have been placed in the home by the courts and social work departments. This is one of the three childrens homes run by the Salvation Army in Johannesburg and caters for approximately 70 children at a time.
The home is run by Captain George Pavey and his wife with a staff of social workers and house parents.
Hosting
Hosting children from the home for weekends and holidays can be a very rewarding experience. The children in the home need contact with a normal home environment. Many children, apart from going to school, have little contact with people and family life outside the home. To become a host for a child one needs to contact one of the social workers at the home, complete a form, and have a short interview. The children are normal children with a lot of love to give in return for love given to them. The experience is very rewarding and well worth the effort involved. To find out more about hosting a child contact Mrs Linda Meiring (social worker) at the home 011-782 5556/7
Donations
As a voluntary organisation, the Salvation Army are always in need of funds to help with the running of the homes. Donations of any description are wellcome. This could take the form of money, your time or unwanted clothing. If you feel you have something to offer the home, please contact the home on the above number.
The homes' main fund raising event is the annual Fete which this year(2001) will take place on Saturday 25 August. Please come along and suport this worthy event. If you would like to help at the fete, contact Matron on the number above.
