Elandsvallei
Hiking Trail
Near Nelspruit,
Mpumalanga
Trail re-routed
and re-named Lindenau Trail. Now a basecamp trail
Nestled in the valley gorged out by the Elands
River over millions of years lies this beautiful hiking trail. It is on the 1800ha farm
Lindenau which has been in the same family for several generations. This is a backpack
trail and should be regarded as quite difficult especially in hot weather.
|
|
The base camp from which the
trail starts is a converted old school house. It is equipped with bunk beds and
mattresses, hot showers and flush toilets. An outside braai area is also available and is
supplied with an ample supply of wood.
Lindenau Lodge is an alternative if
non hiking family wish to accompany your party and require home comforts. |

|
|
From the Old School house, the
trail follows the course of the Elands river for some distance passing a beautiful
waterfall and some lovely views into the gorge. |

The trail eventually leads away
from the river and climbs steeply towards the mountain tops. |
|
|
|
The overnight accommodation on
the second night is a very beautiful thatched stone house. At the moment it only has cold
showers but there are plans to install hot showers. An open air braai facility with plenty
of wood is also provided. Paraffin lanterns are provided and kettle and cast iron pots. |

The second day of the trail
starts off with a scramble through a lovely indigenous riverine forest. There is a lovely
waterfall and some beautiful rock pools. |

Eventually the trail leaves the
forest and ascends steeply until views of the Elands Valley come into sight once more |
|
|
|
The final part of the trail
takes the hiker underneath a rocky krans before a steep descent back to base camp. |

Conclusion
The Elandsvallei hiking trail is the
sort of trail that one can say afterwards that one knows that one has had a hiking
weekend. It can be strenuous especially under hot conditions.
