Buffalo Gorge Outdoor Adventure Centre

Hiking Trails, 4x4 Trails and Horse Safaris

Abseiling and Mountain Biking

Within easy reach of Gauteng, Buffalo Gorge offers a variety of activities and trails to suite the requirements of the outdoor enthusiast. There are four hiking trails to choose from, including a 13km day trail which passes scenic views of the Avontuur Valley. The other three trail are shorter and pass mainly through indigenous bush and forest. The accommodation is rustic and includes the option of taking your own tent along.

The camp at Buffalo Gorge is rustic but has some pleasant surprises such as a swimming pool and a kitchen tent that includes a gas stove and a fridge.

There are three trails that focus on the mountains that border the camp. They range from 1-2 hours in duration. The fourth trail is approximately 13km long and should take about 4-5 hours to accomplish. None of the trails can be regarded as difficult or strenuous and the only possible problem could be for those that suffer from fear of heights.

The 13km (white route) is well worth the rather mediocre start through flat grassland. The edge of the Avontuur Gorge is reached about half way and from then on spectacular views and rock formations go to make this trail a trail to remember.

Vegetation is varied and hold some interesting surprises. There is a natural spring that bubbles to the surface close to the trail. The Spine-leaved monkey orange (Strychnos pungens) is prominent along the route.

Along this trail is a 50m abseiling cliff for those that would like some additional frills

The three shorter walks all start of by following a beautiful forested kloof for some distance before each breaking away to go in its own direction. The yellow route takes the hiker to the top of the ridge and follows it in a northerly direction.

Along the yellow route the trail passes another abseiling point, this time a drop of 15m.

The descent is steep and can be a little slippery in the rain. There are two shorter options to the yellow route.

Besides hiking and abseiling, Buffalo Gorge also offers horse riding and a new mountain bike route.
