Bergheim Hiking Route and Resort
| |
Bergheim
is situated in the northern part of the Magaliesberg mountains, not
far from Rustenburg in North West Province. The resort offers great
hiking opportunities for people who need to break away for the day
from the city and the shopping malls. Bergheim is also ideal for a
camping or caravanning weekend and has a swimming pool braai
facilities and tuck shop. |

The path starts from the
camping grounds and heads towards the distant mountains and in
particular a deep gorge. The trail passes alongside a beautiful rock
strewn stream for some distance until the sides of the mountain are
reached. Here the hiker has the option of climbing up either the left
hand or right hand side of the gorge, (the left hand seems slightly
steeper). |

Once the
top is reached, the terrain evens out and becomes much easier. |

At the
top a beautiful stream provides an ideal place for a rest and
something to eat (and maybe even a swim). |

Once the
turnaround has been made it does not take long for the decent
especially if a cold beer is waiting and the promise of some meat
cooked over a slow braai fire. |

Conclusion
| |
A day
hike at Bergheim makes for a good days outing, but it should be noted
that the walk is largely unmarked and therefore needs a fare amount of
orienteering to prevent getting lost. However, if you keep the gorge
and stream in consideration, it should not present any problems. The
climb to the top can be strenuous especially in summer and it is
important to have an early start and take plenty of drinking water
along (2 litres recommended). |
