Blue Wildebeest Trail

Close to Badplaas, Mpumalanga

The eastern Mpumalanga escarpment offers spectacular scenery that rivals any other area of South Africa. Place names such as Badplaas, Barberton and Chrissiesmeer conjure up visions of spectacular scenery, mountain brooks and green rolling hills. Situated just 10km from Badplaas lies the Blue Wildebeest hiking trail, a basecamp trail that is suitable for the whole family.

         
 

The facilities at the Blue Wildebeest Trail are excellent and cater for 12 people. They include flush toilets and showers (hot water powered by a 'Donkey boiler', gas stove (bring your own gas bottle) and large outside thatched lapa.

  
 
         
 
 

The Blue Wildebeest Trail consists of two single day trails from the overnight hut. The hiking distances are not excessive (9,5km and 6,5km) and should be suitable for the whole family.

  
         
 

The well laid out trail cover a wide variety of terrain and the chances of seeing game including Blue Wildebeest and Impala is good

  
 
         
 
  There are some beautiful rock formations and some lovely rock cascades that will help keep the camera happy.  
         
 

Care needs to be taken when clambering through the rocks

  
 
         
 
 

The trail follows the stream most of the way back to the starting point on both days.
